Opportunity Information: Apply for PDS BUJUMBURA FY24 01

The Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) 2024 is a competitive grant opportunity offered by the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura for alumni of U.S. government-funded or U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs. The fund is designed to help exchange alumni take the skills, networks, and experience they gained during their U.S.-supported exchange and turn them into practical, community-focused projects that address real local challenges. AEIF has been running since 2011 and has supported nearly 500 alumni-led projects worldwide, and the 2024 round continues that model by backing public service projects that are conceived and managed by alumni teams.

For Burundi, the Embassy is specifically looking for projects that align with three broad priority areas tied to U.S. engagement goals in the country. The first is "Invest in People," which includes strengthening systems for health and education, improving planning and management of resources that lead to better health outcomes, expanding equitable access to education, and improving food security and nutrition. The second is "Invest in the Economy," focused on building the foundations for a stronger economy by improving the business and investment environment, helping people (especially underserved or vulnerable groups) gain access to capital, training, and entrepreneurship opportunities, supporting market-based economic growth, and doing so in a way that protects and enhances the natural environment. The third is "Invest in Society and the Region," which centers on peace, openness, and stability by promoting inclusive governance, human rights, rule of law, strengthening civil society and human-rights-supporting institutions, and encouraging positive contributions to peace and stability within Burundi and the surrounding region.

Eligibility is narrowly aimed at exchange alumni. Applicants must be alumni of a qualifying U.S. government-funded or sponsored exchange program (as listed through the U.S. Department of State alumni exchange programs) or alumni of U.S. government-sponsored J-1 exchange programs. Proposals must come from teams of at least two alumni, and teams can include alumni from different exchange programs and even different countries. A key restriction is that U.S. citizen alumni are not allowed to submit proposals as applicants, although they can still participate as members of a project team. Applications must be submitted by individual exchange alumni or by alumni associations of U.S. government exchange alumni. Organizations such as non-profits, NGOs, think tanks, and academic institutions cannot apply in their own name, but they are allowed to participate as implementing partners supporting the alumni-led project.

The award is issued as a grant under a discretionary funding opportunity from the U.S. Mission to Burundi (Funding Opportunity Number: PDS BUJUMBURA FY24 01; CFDA/Assistance Listing: 19.022). The Embassy anticipates making about two awards, with an award ceiling of $35,000 per project. In practical terms, that means selected alumni teams can receive up to $35,000 to run a clearly defined project that delivers community benefit under one or more of the priority themes described above.

To apply, interested alumni teams must submit their proposals by email to BurundiPublicDiplomacy@state.gov, with the application deadline set for February 15, 2024. The opportunity is administered through the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura, and it is framed as a way for exchange alumni to lead and implement innovative, locally relevant solutions that build on their exchange experience while contributing to development, prosperity, and stability goals in Burundi.
